Darwin's Lab:
The energy is directed outwards of the structure, placing an emphasis on the surrounding nature. The land form comes up and amalgamates with the building, whereby the building and environment have become one. It is as if the building has evolved to become more adapted to its environment.
Darwin's Lab at Night:
Here one can see the relative size of the lab, it is large enough for Darwin's work to be conducted, provides shelter, whilst maintaining an open plan so that the surrounding ecosystems can constantly be observed. This observation is essential to Darwin's work.

The Ramp from Darwin's Lab to the Meeting Area:
Both Darwin and Hawkins can see the meeting area from their Laboratories. It is a constant reminder of the other. Therefore, Darwin does not become fixated the earth, and the minutia of organisms, nor Hawkins become too focused on the infinite possibilities and forget about reality. The small claustrophobic area, and low foreboding roof, humbles and ground all who enter the space.

Inside the Meeting Place:
On the wall of the meeting place is the electro-liquid aggregation quote. From Hawkins' lab he can read about man's god-like intellect and ability to solve all the questions of the universe - a reflection of his pursuits. Only from the meeting place is he reminded of man's lowly origins, and consequently Darwin. Likewise, Darwin can see the grand structure, a symbol of humanities strength, but upon closer inspection is reminded to be humble.

Hawkins' Lab:
Stephen Hawkins has proved to mankind that one can achieve great things without physical greatness, if one has the mental capabilities. This simple structure reflects the value of utilising one's abilities to their maximum potential, and never being hindered by one's limitations. One can work in the space and look up to the universe above.

These structures have changed somewhat from my initial ideas, primarily because I ran out of rectangular prisms to complete my vision. Instead I have used the land form itself as floors and walls. As a result I found it more effective to separate my axonometrics from one large structure to three smaller ones.

The Black Box

The BlackBox by Erica Kruger: In her exploration of light and shadow Erica Kruger looked at Plato's Republic.

'Republic' addresses issues of perspective and reality. I feel this directly links to our clients and in particular the issues I want to address which were highlighted through my electro-liquid aggregation. Both Darwin and Hawkins are striving to find answers to some of the greatest mystery’s of our would. Both are searching for answers about the past, how the world began and evolved as well as questioning the future- where will we lead, what advances will we make. Darwin’s focus is on the biological and Hawkins’ is on the conceptual, yet both are constrained by the practical and reality. Plato draws the analogy that our reality is our cave- and the way we perceive things is really just like shadows on the wall, without knowing the whole picture. However, like the sun for the prisoners in the cave, we have knowledge. Hawkins and Darwin are respected individuals because of their mission to use this knowledge to break free from the ‘cave’ and expand our understanding.
In my design I would like to convey this sense of going beyond the average man.

Inspiration

This property could have easily been created from a set of axenometrics such as the ones we drew. I feel that that this image highlights how effective a property made just out of 'boxes' can be.

Charles Darwin and his thinking is very much based on humanities connection with the earth and its ecosystems. I feel that buildings are a very powerful symbol of humanities mark on this earth, and the way they alter nature whilst being a part if it. I would like to convey the symbiosis of the land and the building within my work. I want to give a sense that rather than being disparate entities the two are intertwined. The following structures showcase this overt connection between land and structure.

Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawkins:

"Man, with all his noble qualities and God-like intellect will go on an intellctual challenge to find a complete theory of the universe, it will be a great triumph of the human race. However, man still bears in his bodily frame an indelible stamp of his lowley origin. "
